Which Material is Right For Your Home - Carpet Or Tile? by Marikor Hidalgo

Having the right materials for your home will ensure that you can enjoy your home for a very long time. On the other hand, not all good things last. If you think your home needs some improvements, you might want to start with your flooring. As there are many flooring choices available in the market, it would be a lot useful to narrow down your options for the time being. Look into carpet or tile just yet.

Carpet

This material is often preferred by home owners who want more warmth and want to avoid noise. This is commonly an augmenting material to layer over an uneven surface like a concrete slab. There are many designs, colors and textures available today. For one, patterned textured carpets like multi-looped berbers can enhance the visual depth of your flooring. Moreover, there are carpet fiber technologies today that enable such material to be softer and more resistant against stains.

Tile

This comes in a much wider variety of colors, sizes, shapes and textures. But the commonly used one in most homes is the ceramic tile, which can be either glazed or unglazed. This is known to be durable and resistant against scratching, fire and water. However, not all ceramic tiles have such qualities. For example, Grades III and IV glazed ceramic tiles are the particular glazed ceramic tiles extremely resistant against scratching, while most glazed ceramic tiles can withstand moisture.

Considerations

Carpet is usually the least expensive material compared with other flooring materials. But the inexpensive cost usually depends on the type of the carpet fiber and design. Generally, it can cost you $1 to $2 per square foot. Tiles on the other hand can cost from $2 to $30 per square foot, once again depending on the design and quality of the material.

While the cost for buying the carpet material itself is relatively cheaper, the maintenance expenses for this type of flooring might be quite pricey and labor intensive as well. You would be required to regularly vacuum the surface especially if you have pets at home. Animal fur can easily get caught in between the carpet fibers. If you or members of your family have allergic reactions against dust and fibers, this would not be suitable for your home as it can easily accumulate dust particles and dirt.

Meanwhile tiles would only require regular sweeping and cleaning with a wet mop. However, some ceramic tiles must be cleaned with non-toxic disinfecting solutions. This is because some tiles can get very slippery. In some cases, a tougher cleaning mixture has to be used in cleaning the grout lines.

Aside from the aesthetic qualities and expenses involved in purchasing and maintaining either material, you must also consider the ease of installing the material. Carpet can be a bit easier to lay down but you will need a good stretcher. Tiles need to be laid out precisely even for a well elevated surface. Either way, you might need professional assistance to ace the task.

Improving one aspect of your home, that is your flooring, would be a way to enhance the look of your home. Whichever material you would choose, the most crucial reminder here is to always prioritize your preference. You and your home would not surely go wrong.
