Post Construction
Apartment Clean Up Tips by Andrew Stratton
A construction project can be dirty
business indeed. Discarded nails, wood chips, dust, plaster, grout
and heavy duty glue are strewn and dripped everywhere. These are not
your every day wipe ups.
You need to put on your own hard hat in
order to turn a newly constructed or remodeled jobsite back into a
home. The building looks fantastic but the leftover debris does not.
First thing you'll need is a can-do
attitude and to be in good physical shape. This job will be heavy
duty and not one for wimps. Other than that, here is a list of
helpful and sometimes essential tools:
1. A ladder in order to climb and reach
all surfaces, even the highest points of the ceiling. 2. A regular
household vacuum cleaner for all rugs and flooring surfaces. 3. A
wet/dry shop vacuum that can handle any sort of mess you run up
against. 4. Window cleaning tools such as a squeegee 5. broom with a
dustpan 6. bucket and a mop 7. scrub brush that is appropriate for
shower and bathtub scrubbing 8. rubber gloves 9. plastic scraper
tool to chisel away the stubborn gunk 10. plastic bottles to fill
with cleansers 11. ordinary toothbrushes are wonderful for getting
at tiny and tight spaces 12. cotton and terry cloth towels and rags
13. some sort of label dissolving cleanser for all those tags left
on new items 14. cleanser such as window cleaner, all purpose
cleaner, an abrasive cleanser, plus a wood cleanser/polisher
combination 15. a plastic cleaning caddy to carry all of the
products and streamline the job 16. large heavy duty trash bags
When cleaning each room, start on one
side and go from top to bottom, removing all dust and debris from
walls, corners, floors. Deposit all stray trash into the large black
garbage bag and carry it as you go. Spray cleansers on windows and
sliding doors, along with their tracks after they've been vacuumed
free of grime. Clean, wipe and polish all woodwork and trim with the
appropriate product.
Unlike a regular housecleaning session,
new window and appliance stickers and labels remnants will need to
be scraped and dissolved from surfaces. Drawers and cabinets will
need to be vacuumed and wiped free of dust and dirt, as well. Vacuum
air conditioning and heating vents, wipe electrical covers and light
switches and sweep all thresholds. Every light fixture will also
need to be cleaned, from the dining chandelier to the hallway
sconce.
